Laurens officer didn’t follow procedure when stopping sheriff, police say

LAURENS, S.C. (WSPA) – An officer’s actions are being called into question after he didn’t follow department policies and procedures at a traffic stop that involved the Laurens County sheriff, according to the Laurens Police Department.

On Thursday, April 20th, a Laurens police officer pulled over Sheriff Don Reynolds for going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone on W. Main Street.

Sheriff Reynolds was given a verbal warning and was allowed to leave the scene of the traffic stop.

According to the police department, every traffic stop that is initiated should be recorded by a body camera, as well as a dash camera.

Police officers are supposed to end every stop with either a written warning, citation for the violation, or an arrest for an arrestable offense.

7 arrested, 3 wanted after drug bust in McDowell Co.

MCDOWELL CO., N.C. (WSPA) – Three people are wanted in connection to a drug conspiracy, according to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities arrested seven suspects during a round-up on Tuesday, but three people were able to get away.

Deputies say 35-year-old Dwayne Bullock is wanted on six counts of conspiracy to traffic heroin, three counts of conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, and one count of continuing a criminal enterprise.

They say 37-year-old Marqueseo Marshay “Pepe” Pearson and 66-year-old William Jackie Pearson, both of Morganton, are wanted on three counts of conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine and one count each of conspiracy to manufacture a Schedule II controlled substance, and aiding and abetting a criminal enterprise.

Big rigs crash on I-85 in Cherokee Co.

CHEROKEE Co., NC (WSPA) – Two tractor-trailers were in an accident on I-85 near mile marker 102 in Cherokee Co. on Wednesday morning, according to SC Highway Patrol.

The say one of the trucks rear-ended the other.

The truck that as rear-ended went off the road, hit and embankment and overturned.

One person was hurt.

Highway Patrol says a man was taken to the hospital was taken to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Driver of the truck that rear-ended the other was cited for traveling too fast for conditions.

Final Call for Officer Jason Harris

There are few thing more heartbreaking than the final calls for police officers, regardless if they are human or K9.

Officer Jason Harris’ last call was this afternoon after his funeral.

The last radio call or radio watch is usually a call given in remembrance that calls the fallen officer’s number followed by “no response” and an out of service code.

Help find ATM fraud suspect in Haywood Co.

HAYWOOD CO., N.C. (WSPA) – The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your help in finding an ATM fraud suspect.

Investigators say the man is connected to several fraudulent ATM withdrawals throughout the county.

Army Captain surprises son at baseball game

PIEDMONT, SC (WSPA) – One Upstate child got a very big surprise at his baseball game this afternoon.

Campbell Conley’s normal Saturday means spending time on the baseball diamond. Another part of that routine, is not hearing his dad cheer him on from the stands.

“It’s been very challenging. Lots of days of having to think ‘Oh my goodness, I can’t believe my husband’s missing first milestones, or missing baseball games,” says Amanda Conley, Campbell’s mom.

Spartanburg police officer dies days after motorcycle crash

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A Spartanburg officer has died after a crash that happened on Union Street Tuesday night, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner says that 39-year-old Jason Gregory Harris has died from the injuries he received in the crash.

The accident happened at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Officer Harris was driving east on Union Street when he struck a car that was turning left into a driveway, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

Troopers say he was thrown from his motorcycle.

Harris was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car was wearing a seatbelt but was also injured and taken to the hospital.

Union Street was closed for several hours while the crash was being investigated.

NC bill rejects Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A bill filed by three Republican lawmakers looks to ban gay marriage in North Carolina.

The “Uphold Historical Marriage Act” says the U.S. Supreme Court over stepped its “constitutional bounds” when in 2015 it struck down what was known as Amendment One.

In May 2012, more than 60 percent of those who cast a ballot voted in favor of Amendment One, that prohibited North Carolina from recognizing or performing same-sex marriages or civil unions.

Rep. Larry Pittman (R-Cabarrus), Rep. Michael Speciale (R-Beaufort) and Rep. Carl Ford (R-Cabarrus) are the primary sponsors of House Bill 780.

Drayton Mills ribbon cutting for Marketplace

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Drayton Mills in Spartanburg is showing off it’s new Marketplace Tuesday.

They were hosting the Spartanburg Area Chamber if Commerce’s Business After Hours.

It is a mixed use space with 289 luxury apartments and the largest historic restoration project in SC, according to a press release.

It features several different restaurants, including:

Mozza Roasters
Melotte Enterprise

Burn Boot Camp will also open its doors in the next few months.

Governor McMaster was there to celebrate the milestone.

Transplant Center opens at Greenville Memorial Hospital

A new blood and marrow transplant center is opening in the Upstate.

Greenville Memorial Hospital celebrated the new McCrary unit this morning with a ribbon cutting.

It recently had a $2 million expansion.

They say the goal is to help patients to get the treatment they need, closer to home.

“When patients come into the hospital for a transplant it is usually a month in duration and so having the access to family and friends to come support them and visit, bring them goodies, really helps buoy their spirits and helps them get through the process a lot easier,” said Dr. Suzanne Fanning with Greenville Hospital System

The center also features music therapy and a wellness suite.
