Hollywild lays off some staff, executive director resigns

SPARTANBURG CO., SC (WSPA) – At a regularly scheduled board meeting Monday night Hollywild board member Tim Todd announced Executive Director Kim Atchley had submitted her resignation, according to Tiffany Hughes, Vice President of Board of Directors for Hollywild.

Hughes says this was not something that was forced and was her decision.

Six to eight people were also laid off at the park.

Hughes says their fundraising campaign fell short of their goal.

The park is closed for the season and they don’t have money coming in.

The board is exploring all options and resources to keep the park open to the community.

A decision to close the park is the very last thing, said to Hughes.

The remaining staff is continuing to take care of the animals.

Traveling Tinkertoy exhibit at Children’s Museum of the Upstate

It’s a new interactive exhibit for parents and children at the Children’s Museum of the Upstate in Greenville.

A twist on an old classic, Tinkertoys are back and helping students with hands on learning.

This toy exhibit is 1500 square feet and it’s targeted for children 3 to 10 years of age.

The exhibit was developed by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with GE and Playskool.

Ceo and Museum President Nancy Halverson said it’s purpose is to inspire educational activities and it using GE technologies that turn imagination into working solutions to real world challenges.

Ha;verson said play is the work of children and visitors to the exhibit will enjoy a variety of activities that promote imagination and collaboration.

Help find person of interest in Cross Hill stabbing

CROSS HILL, SC (WSPA) – A man in Cross Hill was stabbed multiple times, according to the Laurens Co. Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on Shealy Circle on Jan. 24.

They say the victim is in his mid-20’s and was stabbed during an argument.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on his condition.

Deputies are looking for James Morgan Hill, 32, as a person of interest.

Man stabbed couple with Samurai sword after meeting to sell items

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCBD)- A man who is accused of attacking a woman and her estranged husband with a “samurai sword” was arrested today.

27-year-old John Michael Juba was arrested today by the U.S. Marshal service on the Isle of Palms.

On December 5th 2016 a woman and her estranged husband arranged to meet a man to buy a few items through the ‘Offer Up’ app. The couple came to the home of the seller on Berkshire Drive where they purchased a printer then returned later on in the evening to also purchase some tools. When they returned to the home the second time there was a man present with a “katana like sword” and without any provocation the man attacked the female victim and her estranged husband.

Pickens store robbery suspect arrested in Hendersonville

PICKENS (WSPA) – A man wanted for robbing a store in Pickens was found and arrested in Hendersonville.

Pickens Police say Richard Milton Moore robbed the Blue Ridge Produce store on Ann Street on Monday morning. Investigators say Moore pointed a gun at an employee, demanded money and left the store with the cash in a white Honda.

Police say the car and gun Moore used were stolen in Spartanburg County.

Investigators say they learned Moore was in the Hendersonville area. Pickens Police, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshall service determined where they would have a chance at finding him.

Police say Moore was arrested Thursday night near a McDonalds restaurant in Hendersonville.

Upstate packaging manufacturer to expand, create 100 jobs

GREENVILLE Co., S.C. (WSPA) — Response Packaging is expanding its Greenville facility and is expected to create 100 jobs with the $5 million investment.

Response Packaging provides manufacturing, design and prototype support and project analysis solutions, according to a statement from the S.C. governor’s office.

Hiring for the new jobs has already started and will continue through the year.

The facility is at 1698 Perimeter Road in Greenville.

“Response is excited to expand its footprint in North America by creating more product offerings to become a fully integrated supplier. We feel that this expansion will differentiate us as a supplier in an evolving industry and position us for continued market share growth,” Response Packaging CEO Brett Kraeling said in the statement.

Gray Court man dies in single-vehicle crash in Laurens Co.

LAURENS Co., S.C. (WSPA) — A man died after troopers say he lost control of the car he was driving and crashed.

Troopers say the single-vehicle crash happened at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday on Fairview Road near Quercus Run.

The coroner identified the driver as 54-year-old Robert Harper of Gray Court.

Troopers say Harper crossed the center, over corrected and lost control of the car. Harper went off the right side of the road, struck some trees and overturned, according to troopers.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner said Harper died of blunt force trauma.

Trampoline damaged again after Greer PD helps family replace it

GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – A trampoline that was damaged earlier this month, and then replaced by officers, has been damaged again, according to the Greer Police Department.

The trampoline belongs to a family who uses it for physical therapy.

The trampoline was cut earlier this month and officers from the Greer Police Department decided to help.

They gathered money and helped replace it this weekend.

But someone cut the trampoline again, police say.

Crews battling commercial fire in Spartanburg Co.

WOODRUFF, S.C. (WSPA) – Several crews are battling a fire at a business on Crescent Greenpond Road, according to the Woodruff Fire Department.

A call came in at 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

Engine Companies 2, 3, and 5, and Squad Company 1 volunteers are responding to the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

1 hurt after shooting in Anderson Co., suspect at large

ANDERSON CO, S.C. (WSPA) – There has been a shooting at M&L Mobile Home Supplies on Hwy 28 Bypass, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

A call came in at 7:07 p.m. Sunday.

Two men got into a fight in the parking lot, and the shooting occurred, the sheriff’s office says.

The weapon used was described as a small handgun.

One person has been taken to AnMedl, according to the sheriff’s office.

Their condition is unknown at this time.

The suspect fled on foot. He was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, the sheriff’s office says.

A K-9 Tracking Team has been called to help search for the suspect.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
